Off to Saudi for the
Surrey Eight ...

Final qualifying at the St George's Hill Club in Surrey saw eight players book themselves onto a flight to Saudi Arabia in December for the Saudi International, the second-richest event on the calendar.

Both Pakistanis made it, Shahid Zaman and Aamir Atlas Khan taking over an hour each, but the longest match of the day was Daryl Selby's marathon 98-minute win over Davide Bianchetti.

Selby is joined by three other Englishmen, a Dutchman and an Egyptian ....  roll on December ...

Draw & Results

Saudi International,

December 2005

Day One ... the Quote Room ...
Simon Parke (Eng) bt Yasir Butt (Pak)
11/6, 11/9, 11/9  (46m)

” He hits the ball well and is pretty talented. I found that if I played tight controlled squash then he would get frustrated. The last two or three points he gave up. Now I play ‘Chip’ in the battle of the ‘Oldies’ ! “

Simon Parke

“I have nothing to say. I am not happy with how I played.”

Yasir Butt

Daryl Selby (Eng) bt Joe Lee (Eng)
11/6, 11/6, 11/7 (38m)

“I played well today. There were lots of good hard long rallies and I thought that I controlled the T well I hit a good length, but I still need to be more positive going forward with the lower tin. I enjoyed playing Joe and he gets better every time. I am looking forward to playing Davide tomorrow “

Daryl Selby

“He absorbs pressure well. I thought that I played the right game, but missed a few vital shots”

Joe Lee (Aged 16)

Bradley Ball (Eng) bt Shawn DeLierre (Can)
11/6, 11/7, 11/8 (33m)

"I felt like this was a warm up to the season and I was getting used to the pace. I have to create my own pace and I wasn’t hard enough on him. I felt things out and feel I need more matches like this to look forward to the season."

Shawn Delierre

Alister Walker (Eng) bt Jesse Engelbrecht (Zim)
11/10(2-0), 11/9, 11/8 (49m)

"That was not pretty but I managed to get through 3-0 and that’s what counts. Now I’m looking forward to tomorrow."

Alister Walker

Aamir Atlas Khan (Pak) bt Renan Lavigne (Fra)
11/3, 11/7, 11/9 (41m)

“I started badly and I didn’t expect him to be so good. My movement wasn’t good. I was better in the third but by then it was a little late. He is a very good player though.”

Renan Lavigne

“I am happy I beat good player. I moved him around 4 corners. It was a very fast game and I was confident and inshallah tomorrow all will go well “

Amir Atlas (Aged 16)

Hisham Ashour (Egy) bt Rob Sutherland (Wal)
11/10 (2-0), 11/2, 11/8 (30m)

“I didn’t expect him to be so good. He has really improved. It was a tight first followed by an easy second. In the third he was back again fighting. I think that I am fit and confident. Tomorrow I am looking forward to a win against Julian! “

Hisham Ashour

Mark Chaloner (Eng) bt Aaron Franckomb (Aus)
11/3, 8/11, 11/8, 11/7 (56m)

“It was a sweet revenge match after last year when I lost to him at the same tournament. I felt that I controlled the match pretty well on nice hot courts. He is full of confidence after his win in Brazil . I was pleased to get him off 3-1. It’s a while since I played ‘Parky’ and it’s going to be hard. Looking forward to it though it should be fun !”

Mark Chaloner
Joe Kneipp (Aus) bt Scott Handley (Eng)
11/9, 11/10(3-1), 11/4 (39m)

“I feel a bit strange because I actually won a match ! No disrespect to Scott of course. It’s been a while so I am still getting used to the feeling. My attacking game was good and I had no expectations of myself, just tried to get myself up for the match.

"I was hungry for once. No expectations again for tomorrow , just see what happens against Alistair. That’s who someone told me I’m playing. I didn’t even look at the draw !”

Joseph Kneipp

Joey Barrington (Eng) bt Alex Stait (Eng)
8/11, 11/4, 11/8, 11/0 (47m)

"I'm happy to get through that one, as I tore a few fibres in Egypt."

Joey Barrington
